The 2nd International Association of Athletic Federations' (IAAF) World Indoor Championships, in 1987, marked the beginning of the medal haul in the early season prestigious competition for The Bahamas. Triple jumper Frank Rutherford captured the bronze in Indianapolis. After him, the list grew with several Bahamians winning two indoor medals. The Bahamas is now a medal presence, always on the world indoor stage.
BSF ratifies 36-member CARIFTA team

Rodgers to compete in Orlando

ORLANDO, Florida —Leah Rodgers, 14, will be entering her first international gymnastics meet this weekend, as the only Bahamian in the competition. The ninth grade student of Queen's College has been a member of Nassau 'Nastics, The Bahamas' oldest gymnastics club, for three years. She plans to make her competition debut at the 2010 Leprechaun Classic in Orlando, Florida, which takes place March 13 and 14.

Rather quietly, the Amateur Boxing Federation of The Bahamas' (ABFB) national program is climbing steadily. Today, four boxers are due to return from an invitational tournament in the Cayman Islands. Welterweight Justin Sawyer and middleweight Godfrey Strachan enabled The Bahamas to draw 2-2 with the host team. Rashad Williams and Jamaal Morley were not successful in their bouts.

Last month, the Caribbean region lost one of its very special boxing administrators. Roy Van Putten died in his native Aruba reportedly from heart complications. A strong-minded no-nonsense individual, Roy was not always in agreement with some of his area boxing colleagues but he forged ahead nevertheless, mending relationships when possible but steadfastly focused on propelling the sport he loved so much and working consistently to provide advancement opportunities for Caribbean boxers.

Now that the Betty Kelly Kenning National Aquatics Complex is temporarily closed, the Bahamas Swimming Federation (BSF) will utilize the 25-meter swimming pool at St. John's College to host meets. The Betty Kelly Kenning Complex was closed by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture about a week ago.
Sports minister knocks demolition decision

While giving his report to the House of Assembly, Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Charles Maynard on Monday questioned the decision of the previous administration, headed by Perry Christie, to demolish two very important facilities. Christie's Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) government with Neville Wisdom as the sports minister had the Andre Rodgers Baseball Diamond and the Churchill Tener-Knowles Softball Stadium demolished. The two much-used competition areas were stables of the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre.

With basketball now completed for 2010 in the Bahamas Scholastic Association (BSA), league president Tom 'The Bird' Grant can look back on what has truly been a breakthrough year. The Taberrnacle Baptist Christian Academy Falcons, on Monday night, registered one of the most inspiring victories in the history of basketball in this country. With the will to win ingrained in them, the Falcons turned back every sensational effort presented to them by the C.C. Sweeting Cobras, to capture the 2010 Hugh Campbell Invitational Championship, in New Providence. The final score was 81-80 and the one-point difference told the story of a resilient squad that listened attentively to Head Coach Norris Bain and brought glory to Grand Bahama.

Arianna wins first conference title

Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace saw that she could win and when she pushed off that last wall she went for it and ended the 100 fly as the South Eastern Conference's (SEC) Champion on Friday at the Gabrielsen Natatorium at the University of Georgia. The Bahamian sophomore swimmer represented the Auburn Tigers in the women's 100 butterfly final at the 2010 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships.

Delroy Boothe, the 37-year-old Grand Bahamian, returned home over the weekend to no fanfare, absolutely none. The general nonchalance is disturbing. Boothe attained success in an international event. He defeated foreigners and fellow Bahamian athletes. The event itself was endorsed and sanctioned by both the Association of International Marthons (AIM) and the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF). Marathon Bahamas took the stage as an authentic event.

Sometimes you just get that feeling about something. This chap Lynden Pindling III, I think will go far in the game of baseball. Bahamian women make marathon statement

Around 5:15 a.m. on Sunday while going to retrieve an item from my vehicle at the Fort Montagu Marathon Bahamas location, I passed a lady who was stretching and loosening up for the race. She greeted me by my name and I just responded casually, not recognizing the person in the still dark morning.

"The Bahamas and the swimming community say farewell to a true Bahamian patriot in the passing of Mrs. Betty Kelly Kenning. The Kennings, both John and Betty, have been very generous in giving back to the Bahamian public. I first met Betty some 15 years ago after my wife Nancy did research on the history of swimming in The Bahamas; it was then that we realized the important role that Betty played in the development of swimming in The Bahamas.

It's a bit unfair. However, Chairman Franklyn Wilson and the rest of the Marathon Bahamas family should take but a short time to bask in the magnificence of Sunday's milestone event. Overnight, Marathon Bahamas became a fixture in the minds of competitors and organizers of this great running test of endurance, around the world. If Marathon Bahamas 2011 is to maximize the goodwill gained from Sunday's classic, within a mere few weeks the planning and actual work must begin.
