By Shavaughn Moss ~ Lifestyles Editor ~ shavaughn@nasguard.com:

Heading out back

BY Shavaughn Moss: Absence makes the heart grow fonder is a saying we've all heard at one point in our lives. Well, a taste of Outback Steakhouse's Kookabura Wings has made me want to open up to this family-styled establishment more in the future.

Queen's College students vie for national young chef titles

By Shavaughn Moss ~ Lifestyles Editor ~ shavaughn@nasguard.com: Hillary Rolle and Christa Lyons are two of the country's budding young culinary talents — and they're both students of the program at Queen's College.

Effective study guide for students Pt. 2

By Pansy Hamilton Brown: It is necessary to remember that success hangs largely on the choices that students make. Students are constantly reminded that they are unique and that their talents should be celebrated. They are cognizant of the fact that parents and teachers have an obligation in their nurturing process and that their needs should not be neglected.

Should everyone vote?

By D. PauL Reilly: I guess that as we get on in years, hopefully we acquire a certain degree of wisdom, which so very often sheds a whole new light of understanding on how we perceive many things in our world. Up to this point in time, I fully believed in democracy, in the so-called democratic method of electing the governments of the world. Now, one of the basic tenants of democracy is the practice of 'One Man One Vote'. In other words, everyone gets to vote in elections for National, State, and Local government.

Salads — more than just iceberg lettuce and tomato wedges

By Roscoe Dames: This past Saturday The Nassau Guardian and Star 106.5FM hosted a Health Fair at the Mall at Marathon. I was fortunate enough to be asked to prepare a few healthy salads for the guests.

Catch of the day

Blue Caviar for lunch that's hearty, simple and delicious

By Shavaughn Moss: When you want something that's really good, you go to the place you're certain will not disappoint.

Effective study guide for students (Pt. 1)

By Pansy Hamilton Brown: True greatness is starting where you are, using what you have, and doing what you can. A key characteristic of students who succeed, is the ability to focus and use appropriate techniques in their study skills and examinations whether they are school-based, or are from national and international boards.

7 tenets of good health

By D. Paul Reilly: There's a very interesting program aired each Sunday at 10.00 AM

Chef Chea steps out

By Shavaughn Moss ~ Lifestyles Editor shavaughn@nasguard.com:

Consistency is key

By Shavaughn Moss ~ Lifestyles Editor ~ shavaughn@nasguard.com: There's one thing that can absolutely break the camel's — or should I say a restaurant's back — and that is the lack of consistency in delivering a quality product and service.

30 minutes to dinner time

By Roscoe Dames: Since the invention of the microwave, the Internet, instant messaging, fast food and disposable everything, do you long for a quick tasty alternative to the madness? It is becoming more and more popular — the 30-minute meal.

Parents must grow in their skills

By Pansy Hamilton Brown: No matter how you look at it, you'll find that it is not only teens who need to grow up. It's crucial for parents to continue to give attention to their own growth process as well.

Forgive yourself & others

By D. Paul Reilly: There are far too many people spread throughout this great big world of ours, who are harboring feelings of anger and bitterness for someone who did them wrong in some way in the past, and so often, way, way back in the past. Well My Friend, I'm here today to tell everyone who doesn't already know it, that this ill-conceived idea of hording ill feelings, of being resentful towards those whom you perceive hurt you in some way in the past, is one of THE most destructive things that a person can do.

Juicing for life

By Shavaughn Moss ~ Lifestyles Editor ~ shavaughn@nasguard.com:

Basking in the glow of a Dune meal

By Shavaughn Moss ~ Lifestyles Editor ~ shavaughn@nasguard.com: The Dune Restaurant at the One & Only Ocean Club is fabulous for dining at night — but I found out recently that it does not disappoint for lunch. Now what could possibly warrant such a decadent surprise by my husband in the middle-of-the-day? The day that my mom gave birth to me just a few years back of course. It was indeed a most delicious birthday treat.

Curry — the spice of life

By Roscoe Dames: Who can resist the aroma of spices coming from a slow simmering curry? This can certainly conjure up images of exotic far-flung destinations, the ready availability of huge array of spices means that these days you can recreate an Indian or Thai feast in your own kitchen.

Teaming up to fight hunger

By STAFF WRITER ~ Nassau Guardian: Hands For Hunger has named New Providence Development Company Limited and Tommy Hilfiger as co-presenting sponsors for their Second Annual Paradise Plates fundraiser. Both companies have each donated $10,000 for the unique event, which will feature an even larger array of gourmet food this year from celebrated chefs and restaurants in The Bahamas.

The challenges of parenting teens

By Pansy Hamilton Brown: You will teach your teens more if you help them evaluate their feelings about the results of their decisions, understand what caused the results and determine what they might do differently to achieve a different result next time.

What it means to be a 'pro'

By D. Paul Reilly: Before we go any further, the word 'Pro' is short for 'Professional', and I honestly believe, that we ALL need to be doing our job, whatever it may be, as a 'True Professional' as a 'Pro'. Incidentally, the best definition I ever heard of the word 'Professional' came from Dr. Denis Waitley Author of the best selling book 'The Psychology of Winning' and it goes like this. "'Professional' — At your best regardless". Yes indeed, regardless of the circumstances which we may be going through right now, we need to be completely professional as we carry our all of our duties at work to the very best of our ability, regardless of what is taking place in our life right now.

Step into Teekie's Nest

By Shavaughn Moss ~ Lifestyles Editor ~ shavaughn@nasguard.com:

Reacquainting myself with a little Asia fare

By Shavaughn Moss ~ shavaughn@nasguard.com: It's been a long time since I've enjoyed Asian food for dinner and had an occasion to do so on Saturday past because of a five-year-old.

Prime your challenges

By Pansy Hamilton Brown: A water pump sometimes loses its prime — whenever this happens, the motor will run but the water won't flow. To get water, the pump has to be primed. Once this happens the water will gush again. Like the water pump, the challenges of life can make you lose your prime. You often pretend that water is in your pump, but you are running dry because of the issues of life. Your life can be different when you know what is important and what to filter out.

The good 'new days'

By D. Paul Reilly: There are, as we all know only too well, a whole lot of people who are always reminiscing, thinking and talking about what they did, about their past accomplishments in, what they refer to as 'The Good 'Old Days''. Now I have no problem whatsoever with a person reflecting upon, thinking about every now and then, the good times they perhaps had in years gone by; that is, provided that they don't get so hung up on what happened in The Past, to the detriment of what they really should be most active with today, in order to ultimately make their tomorrows successful too.

Make it a point to attend a wine and food festival

By Roscoe Dames: If you really want to indulge your senses why not attend a wine and food festival in one of your favorite locations. You may not have given this much thought, but, in one of your favorite vacation destinations there just may be a wine and food festival that you can enjoy, or, you can make a new destination your favorite because they do host such a festival.
