The power of TV

By D. Paul Reilly:

The actual environment in which we are all brought up in has a tremendous bearing on how we ultimately think and act....this is an undisputable FACT! Now today, at the beginning of the 21st century, television has become a big part of that environment, and therefore influences people, and in particular the young whose fertile minds are being molded by what they experience, what they see and hear....this also is a FACT!

I was watching the program 'The Bottom Line' on BBC World the other day, when all three guests were discussing the future of TV and the internet. One of the guests revealed, that the average person actually watches 26 hours of television each week. Now, I know a lot of people who are watching a whole lot more television than that average; in fact, I am indeed familiar with households where the television appears to be on at all times, when the people are home, it's never turned off, even when people come to visit; and they also go to sleep with the television on.

I have watched many discussions over the years on television by experts in the field, and they all agree, they're unanimous, that too much television is not a good thing for children to be exposed to. And yet, once again I am unfortunately familiar with far too many parents who actually use the television set as a baby sitter, who allow their children to sit in front of the television set all the time. This My Friend, is extremely detrimental to these young children whose minds are being molded in the wrong fashion.

Now I'm quite sure that many may say "D. Paul surely you watch television yourself?" Yes I do, but not all day and night long, and I might add, I'm extremely selective with the type of programming which I watch. For example: I watch PBS on Saturday mornings when that network so often presents some wonderful lecture series with people like Dr. Wayne Dyer, Dr. Daniel Amen, and Dr. Deepak Chopra who actually educate, inform, and greatly inspire me. I also watch some great interview programs like 'Think Tank' and 'John McLaughlin'; and I watch some extremely good debates on BBC World like 'The Doha Debates' with moderator Tim Sebastian.

Yes My Friend, 'The Power of TV' is enormous, so please choose your television programming very carefully, and be absolutely sure that you don't watch that little box all day long, like some misinformed people unfortunately do. You must learn to sit alone in The Silence, to be quiet once in a while and THINK. You also need to read some wholesome, uplifting literature from time to time. And one final point; don't allow your children to watch television all day long, for if you do, you'll make a worthless ZOMBIE out of them!

THINK ABOUT IT!
